"But I did want to ask about the way she got pregnant — at the party in the first issue of Buffy Season 9, after Buffy became black-out drunk. Her behavior at that party has already bothered some fans, and to learn she got pregnant there, and doesn’t know by whom, will bother some fans even more, especially those who want Buffy to be, well, more responsible."

— HOW COULD SOMEONE BE SO IRRESPONSIBLE AS TO BE RAPED? Good question, Entertainment Weekly.

APE IN A CAPE: Someone Asked...

gailsimone:

…so here we go.

One of my big problems with Watchmen is how stupidly the near-rape is handled. And it’s EPIC stupid.

It’s full of every dumbass cliche there is, and unfortunately, this was common in work of the time.

We have:

Slut Shaming, check.

Woman falls in love with her rapist, check.

This is basically why I have a knee-jerk response to the issue of how great Alan Moore is.

ummmmmm, that second picture ……..

um nothing. making out with someone doesn’t guarantee that you’re going to sleep with them and if you don’t give consent, that’s rape.

They chose the wrrroooonnnggg picture because her hands are telling a different story.

She could give him a blow job while humming The Battle Hymn of the Republic, he still doesn’t get to fuck her without her enthusiastic consent.

As usual, feministnoise is right, but also (equally importantly) does anyone want to join my Google+ circle of “Guys into receiving BJs while the person giving us a BJ hums The Battle Hymn of the Republic?” Everyone, right?

So, the African hotel maid who was sexually assaulted by the former head of the International Monetary Fund turned out not to be the blessed virgin Mary, and so now they’re gonna drop all the charges so he can go run for the presidency of France. Of course, this was to be expected.
Wealthy men have been raping the help since time immemorial. Hell, our founding fathers did it, and for Dominique Strauss-Kahn, it’s practically a resume builder that he forced a women to blow him in a luxury hotel. The French love that shit. He’s like a Dick Cheney who can still get it up.
For those of you who’ve followed this case and are now concerned with all the unflattering details that are being leaked about the victim, please don’t act surprised. This is how it’s done. Rich creepy fuckers like DSK have access to the best character assassins in the world, and trust me, they get away with shit that would make Charlie Sheen blush.
It’s easy to make fun of an American sensibility that creates bimbo presidential candidates like Sarah Palin, but it’s a much more insidious mindset that allows rapists like this the any chance at being a head of state.

Kathleen Passidomo (R), Florida: 11 year old was raped "because she was dressed up like a 21-year-old prostitute"

stfuconservatives:

drinkthe-koolaid:

blissandzen:

jonathan-cunningham:

The exact quote:

There was an article about an 11 year old girl who was gangraped in Texas by 18 young men because she was dressed up like a 21-year-old prostitute. And her parents let her attend school like that. And I think it’s incumbent upon us to create some areas where students can be safe in school and show up in proper attire so what happened in Texas doesn’t happen to our students.

The article she is referring to was a New York Times article that blamed the victim of the gang rape and coddled the rapists by stating how they would “have to live with this for the rest of their lives” and humanizing them with names and characteristics while leaving the victim as nothing more than an 11 year old girl (no name, description or otherwise humanizing adjectives).

How much more gotdam “humanizing” description do you want than “11 year old girl”?

I don’t get this at all. I don’t care what the girl was wearing. Rape is illegal, period. If you rape someone, you are a piece of shit and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Period.

Just disgusting. I don’t care how she dressed or how old she looked, she was eleven years old.

Um, love your blog, but I don’t care how ANY woman or girl is dressed or how she looks, rape is always terrible.

Love the blog though, srsly. Almost said hi at the rally for choice, but got nervous.

"The statement went on: “As for residents’ references to the accused having to ‘live with this for the rest of their lives,’ those are views we found in our reporting. They are not our reporter’s reactions, but the reactions of disbelief by townspeople over the news of a mass assault on a defenseless 11-year-old."

— The New York Times wants us to think that its reporters and editors aren’t morons, which is a losing battle. Let’s play a game called, “How would I have reported this story, if I am to assume [as this quote wants me to] that every single person in town expressed nothing but disgust in the slutty antics of a child and disappointment that these young men’s promising careers may be cut short.” I might include a line like, “Asked what a community’s responsibility is to teach boys that rape is terrible and protect girls from predators, nobody had any response at all.” Just to show that you actually understand the issue you’re reporting on. Please don’t lie to me and tell me that you were just going off what people were saying, because that says to me that you, the New York Times, interviewed maybe three people and printed what they said verbatim, and that’s not a good example of all the news that’s fit to go fuck yourself.

"Sexual encounters have their ebbs and flows. What may be unwanted one minute can with further empathy become desired."

-Geoffrey Robertson, attorney for alleged rapist Julian Assange, quoted in today’s New York Times.

I know the Assange case is old news, but I found this quotation really interesting. (Interesting : disturbing :: potato : potahto.) In particular, I was captivated by the phrase “with further empathy.”

With further empathy a woman will recognize how fervently a man wishes to put his penis inside her own personal body. With further empathy she will enthusiastically comply with his wish. With further empathy she will transform into kindness and self-sacrifice incarnate, a Patient Griselda of sexual healing.

It’s almost admirably brazen to suggest that the people lacking empathy were Mr. Assange’s victims, Ms. A and Ms. W, and not Mr. Assange himself. Then again, I suppose the phrase could go both ways: “what may be unwanted one minute (refraining from penetrating an unwilling person) can with further empathy become desired.” When I interpret the statement like that, I find myself agreeing wholeheartedly. Every would-be rapist should pause, have some empathy for the human being who has not consented to a sexual act, and choose not to rape.

Sady Doyle: Once More, With Feeling:

sadydoyle:

There is a common misperception that rape and sexual assault are uncommon and extraordinary crimes. In fact, they are quite common. Some statistics estimate that 1 in 6 women will be the victim of a sexual assault within her lifetime; others estimate that the rate is actually 1 in 4. This does…

Read Sady Doyle’s post in full, and you’ll be a better-informed person when you talk about, FOR EXAMPLE, Assange.

The military is and always has been the best place to be a woman.

The U.S. military has started court-martialing women for getting pregnant. Military types assure the world that this policy is completely fair: men are also getting court-martialed for doing the impregnating, and besides, the policy only applies in cases where women get pregnant as a result of consensual sex.

So, you know, handled! No thorny issues here!

I am so glad that the military, unlike every other institution and individual ON EARTH, has flawless knowledge of who in their ranks has been sexually assaulted. (This omniscience, as everyone knows, has led to rape being incredibly rare in the military. It happens almost never. FACT.)

And I’m so happy that men, as well as women, are being denied their reproductive rights. When I say “equality,” that’s definitely what I’m going for. Granted, as Stars and fucking Stripes pointed out, “The woman is immediately suspect once the pregnancy comes to light, but unless she identifies her partner, the male could go unpunished despite bearing the same culpability under the order,” but I think that’s a minor hypothetical issue, and we can basically just cross that bridge when we come to it. IF WE EVER DO. Come on, guys; let’s be real.

Finally, you might be worried about oversight, but have no fear! Major General Anthony Cucolo, who conceived (without a uterus—ha ha!) of this glittering new policy, told ThinkProgress the following: “To ensure a consistent and measured approach in applying this policy, I am the only individual who passes judgment on these cases.” For me, the hallmark of a fair review process is centralizing all power with one single human being. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG.
