"The majority of Jews have remained silent for a variety of reasons: There is a sense that we Jews should stick together and not attack one another. There’s a reluctance even to name Jewish fundamentalism as such, and recognize it for what it is. There’s the false nostalgia of, say, “Fiddler on the Roof,” which depicts Haredim as cuddly and quaint, rather than, as they often are, deliberately ignorant of modernity, misogynist, complicit in violence and actively desirous — as evidenced by the recent Channel 10 report in Israel — of taking over Israeli civic institutions."

This is, in my opinion, the greatest threat to Judaism that exists today. The Haredim are a really big problem.

Israel uses Facebook to blacklist pro-Palestinian protesters

superdiscochino:

fuckyeahmarxismleninism:

Israel used Facebook to compile a pro-Palestinian blacklist of hundreds of names. On Friday, the country’s government then asked foreign airlines to keep those on the list off flights to Israel, prevented many activists from boarding Tel Aviv-bound flights in Europe, questioned dozens more upon arrival at its main airport, and denied entry to select individuals.

Yigal Palmor, a spokesman for Israel’s Foreign Ministry, said the list comprised of individuals identified as planning to create “provocations” upon arrival. “These people announced on their Internet sites that they planned to come here and cause disruptions, and told their friends. We were able to contact other foreign ministries and simply give them links.” Barring entrance in such cases is “accepted practice in any country,” he added.

There are a lot of things that are hard about being a Jew. Dealing with the Israeli government being assholes is always the hardest.

"To my colleagues, I say this: it is not possible to abstain from choosing. Either stand with the more than 170 Orthodox rabbis who have openly and proudly condemned homophobia and bigotry, while at the same time maintaining a traditionalist reading of the halacha regarding homosexuality, or stand with the Rosh Yeshiva who told me that teenage suicide is a mitzvah."

— A must-read for Jews, or for all religious people who do not think faith demands bigotry. Or for people who need convincing. For everybody, okay?

"Anytime we claim that one cultural form is more authentic than another, we are replicating privilege and marginalization."

— My mom emailed me this article to read, and it’s really good. It deals with Judaism, and also A Serious Man. Thanks, my mom! Also, it is from The Forward, which use to be published exclusively in Yiddish, so when we refer to it I call it Der Forvertz and my grandma gets a big kick out of that. Now you know!
